Yesterday, May 2nd, Wema Bank celebrated 78 years of being in the banking industry and announced its goal to become a tier-1 bank.
In addition, the bank commemorated the 6th anniversary of Alat, a digital banking application that allows customers to conduct banking transactions. During the event in Lagos, Mr. Moruf Oseni, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Director of Wema Bank, highlighted that the most significant achievement was the restoration of the bank to its former status in the banking industry.
As an institution that has endured for 78 years when many of its counterparts have vanished, it is a remarkable accomplishment for us. As we approach our 9th decade, we anticipate a grander celebration when we reach 80. Furthermore, we hope that Wema Bank will continue to thrive for another 80 years and beyond.
Our most significant achievement to date is the successful restoration of the bank to a top position in the Nigerian banking industry. Six years ago, we introduced an innovative product called Alat, which has been recognized both locally and globally as a world-class offering. From our perspective, it has propelled us back to the forefront of banking in Nigeria.
We believe that our achievements thus far are just the beginning. While setting a target of N30 billion is impressive, we were able to accomplish this goal this year, and we anticipate surpassing it next year. Wema Bank is the result of a merger between two great banks, Wema and National, both of which were among the top five banks in Nigeria at the time. Our objective is to elevate this bank to that same level and achieve tier-one status. Mr. Oseni expressed his gratitude to the past and present executives, staff, and customers of the bank for their unwavering support in the bank's success.
