US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reached out to Nigeria's President-Elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting his dedication to enhancing the US-Nigeria relationship with the incoming administration. According to spokesperson Matthew Miller, Blinken emphasized that the partnership between the two countries is rooted in common interests and robust people-to-people connections, which should be further strengthened during President-elect Tinubu's term.

 

In addition, Miller mentioned that Secretary Blinken and President-elect Tinubu had a conversation about the significance of inclusive leadership that encompasses all Nigerians. They also addressed the ongoing comprehensive security cooperation and discussed reforms aimed at bolstering economic growth.

President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed his commitment to promptly commence his duties and foster national unity upon assuming office on May 29. He also assured that he would strive to maintain positive relations with the United States. Tinubu's spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, stated that the telephone conversation between Tinubu and Secretary Blinken was candid and amicable. The president-elect highlighted his immediate priorities, which include implementing institutional reforms and development initiatives to strengthen democratic institutions and provide assistance to underprivileged Nigerians.

 

Furthermore, he conveyed his strong determination to fortify Nigeria's democracy and faithfully serve the people as their president.

During the approximately 20-minute discussion, President-elect Tinubu reminisced about seeking refuge in the United States during his exile period while advocating for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to democratic principles and expressed his firm belief that the election results, in which he emerged as the clear winner, truly represented the will of the Nigerian people.

 

Additionally, he emphasized the significance of Nigeria's role in Africa and urged the United States to consider this importance. He called for essential support in areas such as security and economic investment, envisioning Nigeria as a leading force and a shining example to other nations on the continent.

 

President-elect Tinubu and Secretary Blinken concluded their conversation on a positive note, exchanging warm greetings and pledging to maintain open channels of dialogue and communication. They expressed their commitment to preserving a robust relationship between the two nations.
