During an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the unveiling of the African Heroes Penalty Cup in Lagos, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, a former captain of the Super Eagles, encouraged the team to strive for consistency and stability to uphold their position as Africa's top team.
Having recently marked 30 years since his initial invitation to the Senior National team, Okocha stated that the Super Eagles' performance had been underwhelming lately, as they had failed to qualify for significant tournaments such as the World Cup. He emphasized the need for the team to stabilize and improve, stating that the absence of the team in the World Cup was a source of disappointment for fans.
According to Okocha, the key is to assemble a formidable team capable of representing the country effectively, as there is no shortage of talent. He expressed his support for the team as an ex-player and wished them the best of luck. Regarding the contract extension of the current Super Eagles coach, Jose Pesseiro, Okocha stated that he trusted the Nigeria Football Federation to make a well-informed decision.
In addition, Okocha provided some guidance to Victor Osimhen, a Nigerian striker who has been in excellent form, urging him to stay focused and take advantage of the opportunity presented to him. He praised Osimhen's enthusiastic and tenacious playing style while encouraging him to remain humble and maintain his strong work ethic. Okocha also warned Osimhen against complacency and advised him to remain vigilant.
Okocha stated that despite the fact that the event is a tournament, he will have the opportunity to reunite with both his former teammates and opponents. Okocha, alongside Daniel Amokachi and Finidi George, will represent Nigeria as part of the African Heroes Penalty Cup, with Okocha serving as the tournament facilitator. The date for the African Heroes Penalty Cup, which will take place in Lagos, has yet to be announced.
The first edition of the tournament will feature eight African countries, including the host nation Nigeria, as well as Morocco, Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon, Mali, Cote D’Ivoire, and Senegal. Each country will send three representatives to compete in a knockout quarter-final round until a finalist is determined, with the winner of the tournament eventually being crowned.
