According to the Executive Director, Michael Nwite, the Senator Polycarp Nwite Foundation for Democratic Accountability emphasizes that President Bola Tinubu's primary objective should be the preservation of Nigeria's unity. As a prominent figure commemorating this year's June 12 Democracy Day, the foundation urges Tinubu to reflect on the collective spirit and shared vision that united Nigerians from diverse backgrounds during the pro-democracy movement of the 1990s, ultimately leading to the establishment of the current democratic system.

He emphasized that unless the Nigerian leadership takes decisive action to address the systemic failures that breed division, nepotism, and greed, the country's democratic progress will remain stagnant.

The foundation further extended congratulations to Tinubu on his election as the 16th President of Nigeria.

"The utmost priority of Tinubu's administration should be the unity of Nigeria, as well as the prosperity and well-being of its citizens," stated the release issued in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, on Democracy Day.

The statement highlights that the June 12, 1993 presidential election, won by the late MKO Abiola but annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida's military regime, is widely regarded as one of the most transparent elections in Nigerian history.

As per the statement, true democracy is meant to serve the people's best interests in a fair, just, transparent, and unifying manner. It should foster trust, encourage patriotism, and instill pride in nationhood, fostering a belief in democratic principles and effective leadership.

We have complete conviction and confidence that Tinubu, having been one of the brave champions for the establishment of democracy in Nigeria, is well-versed in democratic principles, norms, and intricacies. As the current leader driving Nigeria's democratic governance, he possesses the willingness and courage to guide the nation towards a future that rejects division, combats nepotism, and addresses ethnic and religious prejudices.

"The decisive actions taken by Tinubu since his first day in office demonstrate the qualities of a President who leads from the forefront and is willing to make difficult decisions for the greater benefit of the people," added the foundation.

Following his inauguration in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, on May 29, Tinubu made a declaration that the fuel subsidy was abolished. Consequently, fuel marketers subsequently raised the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit (commonly known as petrol), a step deemed necessary by the Federal Government to align with market conditions.
