During the National Daily Awards ceremony in Lagos, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo compared the performances of Nigerian leaders after independence with those of the present time, and he came to the conclusion that the leaders of the past were better. Despite the political turmoil that existed then, similar to what the country is currently experiencing, they were resolute in selecting competent leaders who made sound decisions for the country.
"In my opinion, the Nigerians who lived in the post-independence era made the correct decisions in selecting their leaders. It is widely known that choosing the right leader has a positive impact on their performance and outcomes."
Obasanjo, who was the keynote speaker at the event, recalled the opinions of world leaders about Nigeria right after gaining independence. He expressed his disappointment that Nigeria has failed to meet those expectations. The former President mentioned that when the Prime Minister of Nigeria visited the United Nations during that time, Nigeria was referred to as a giant in the sun, not just a giant of Africa.
However, he raised some important questions, such as whether the leaders of the post-independence era possessed certain qualities that are absent in today's leadership. Additionally, he questioned if the values of Nigerians have changed over the years and pondered what Nigeria is today and what Nigerians desire it to become. Finally, he asked how Nigeria could become the country that its citizens desire.
Having spent a significant portion of my life engaged in peacemaking and mediation, I have realized that peace, security, and stability are vital elements for any country's development and progress. I believe that without justice, equity, and fairness, a country cannot achieve greatness.
Furthermore, when we examine Nigerians individually, we can see that there is something remarkable about them. They excel in every field and are achieving remarkable feats globally. It is time for us to unite and work towards the betterment of our country. If we fail to do so, our existence will be meaningless. It is our responsibility to make a positive impact and leave behind a better society for future generations.
Our belief is that the most effective way to motivate individuals who have faith in this great nation and are committed to its success is by acknowledging and supporting their positive efforts. By recognizing and encouraging them to continue their valuable work, we can empower them to contribute even more towards the progress of our country.
Eminent Nigerians such as the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, were recognized and honored with awards for their exceptional achievements.
