During the 2023 policy meeting held at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examinations (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, announced the board's intention to introduce a "Bring Your Own Device" program for the Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examinations (UTME) and the Direct Entry Examinations (DE).
This initiative aims to enable candidates to use their mobile phones to take the exams. Prof. Oloyede emphasized that JAMB has been incurring significant expenses in organizing these examinations, which is why the board is considering this innovative approach.
During the presentation delivered by Oloyede, the board expressed their plans, stating, "Regarding the way forward, we are considering the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) approach for JAMB students to use their own phones.
This approach reduces capital investment but may not contribute significantly to digital literacy. Additionally, a mobile examination malpractice tribunal will be established to address criminal offenses, while institutions will handle cases of misconduct. We will collaborate with security operatives and relevant agencies to combat cybercrimes by leveraging their expertise on candidate assessment.
Certain services will be shifted to the registration portal to prevent extortion, and an Open Book Examination format will be implemented to discourage cheating."
To discourage impersonation, it is crucial to have the political will and collective endeavors to implement a unified identification system for all citizens in alignment with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
