In response to the pollution of the Osun river caused by mining activities in Osun State, the state government has taken action to initiate the cleanup of the river.

Furthermore, a warning has been issued to miners, emphasizing the importance of treating contaminated water utilized in their mining operations before its discharge into tributaries connected to the Osun river.

 

During the commencement ceremony of the reclamation effort in Idominasi, Professor Lukmon Jimoda, the Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Solid Minerals and Environment, highlighted the negative impact of mining activities on certain tributaries that flow into the Osun river. Consequently, the government has taken the decision to purify the water and ensure its safety for tourists.

As per the Ministry of Information bulletin obtained on Sunday, a statement has been released stating that Jimoda, represented by Oladele Olawuni, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, has instructed miners to consistently cover excavated sites during their operations.

 

The mining operations in the state have significantly impacted the tributaries of the Osun river, leading to its pollution. The river holds great importance as a major tourist attraction for visitors worldwide. Consequently, the state government has taken the necessary step to initiate the cleanup process.

In addition, it has become a priority to educate miners about the importance of treating the water used in their activities before releasing it into the tributaries. Furthermore, ensuring the safety of the people, it is imperative for miners to cover up excavated sites before leaving those areas.

 

According to him, any miners who fail to adhere to the existing mining regulations will face penalties, sanctions, and potentially have their contracts terminated.

Furthermore, Biola Oni, the Director of Environmental Health in the Ministry, expressed appreciation to the contractor for promptly mobilizing to the site and commencing work. He emphasized that the state government recognizes the risks posed to residents by the pollution and, as a result, has made the decision to restore the Osun river to its original state.
