Julius Ogueri, the Deputy Comptroller and Officer in charge of Ikoyi Prisons, has requested the assistance of Lions Club and other charitable organizations in providing a bus to the prison. This bus would enable the daily transportation of inmates to court. Ogueri made this plea while attending the inauguration of the newly renovated and equipped Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club Vocational Centre, which was constructed by the club within the Ikoyi prison premises.
He expressed his frustration with a situation in which a vehicle transporting inmates to court broke down on the road. He stated, "We face numerous challenges, one of which is how to transport inmates to the courts due to the majority of our vehicles being out of service. There was an incident where one of our vehicles broke down while carrying inmates to court, and we had to find an alternative means of transportation. This poses a security risk and is quite embarrassing."
The inmates eagerly anticipate their court appearances as it instills hope in them for securing their freedom. The Deputy Comptroller of Ikoyi Prisons appeals to the Lions Club and other charitable organizations to provide a vehicle that would facilitate regular transportation of inmates to the courts.
During the event, Taiwo Raji, the President of Ikoyi Lions Club, provided a historical background of the project, highlighting that Lion Janet Oderinde initiated it in 1994. He also listed some of the equipment available at the center, such as sewing machines and accessories, shoe-making machines and accessories, carpentry and furniture machines, and other related tools.
Furthermore, addressing the gathering, Mr. Anogwi Anyanwu, the District Governor of Lions Clubs International District 404A1, affirmed the club's commitment to maintaining a collaborative relationship with the prison. He stated that the club would undertake further projects aimed at benefiting the inmates.
