In Northern Malawi, a road accident involving football fans has reportedly resulted in the feared loss of at least 22 lives, with several others sustaining injuries.

According to the Malawian police, the incident took place on Sunday morning when a 10-ton truck, transporting more than 80 passengers, including football players and supporters of a division one league, overturned. Local media in Malawi reported that the tragic collision unfolded on the Karonga-Chitipa M26 Road, as stated in a police report.

According to the report, it stated that the driver, due to excessive speed, lost control of the vehicle and was unable to navigate the left turn. As a result, the truck collided with the road embankment, causing it to overturn sideways.

Due to the severity of head injuries sustained by some of the injured individuals, the police expressed concerns that the death toll could potentially increase.

Expressing his shock, Youth and Sports Minister Uchizi Mkandawire revealed his profound sorrow over the high number of casualties in the accident.

"We are deeply saddened and devastated. I would like to offer my sincere condolences to all the grieving families. Furthermore, I wish a speedy recovery and good health to all those who have been injured," stated Mkandawire.

As a mark of respect for the deceased, all football matches scheduled for Sunday in Northern Malawi were postponed in the aftermath of the tragic accident.

In recent times, Malawi has experienced an increase in road accidents, as indicated by the police, with a total of 5,553 accidents occurring in 2022. Tragically, these accidents resulted in the loss of 1,529 lives, while 573 individuals suffered injuries.
