After the previous meeting ended without reaching a resolution, the Federal Government and the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) have decided to convene once more today. This development arises approximately one week after JOHESU leaders initiated an indefinite strike due to the government's failure to meet their demands.

On May 9, 2023, the JOHESU leadership issued a letter setting a 15-day ultimatum for the Federal Government. The ultimatum was prompted by the alleged inconsistencies of the government during ongoing negotiations concerning the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers under JOHESU's purview.

The entity representing various health workers' unions and associations expressed concern over the government's tendency to deviate from the agreed terms and rules of engagement regarding fair treatment in determining wages and benefits for health workers in Nigeria.

In addition to reiterating their demands, the unions called upon the federal government to uphold the agreed Health Salary Structure, which had been pending since 2014 but was addressed in the settlement of September 2017.

They also urged the government to provide a specific allowance to health workers affiliated with JOHESU/AHP, along with the immediate and unconditional implementation of the Consultant Cadre circular for pharmacists across all federal health institutions.

Additional requests encompass the payment of salaries that have been withheld from JOHESU members at the Federal Medical Center in Owerri, Jos University Teaching Hospital, and Lagos University Teaching Hospital. They also demand the release of the withheld salaries for the months of April and May 2018. Furthermore, they urge the swift adjustment of the retirement age from 60 to 65 years and seek the inclusion of certain health workers in the distribution of the new hazard allowance. Lastly, they call for the settlement of the remaining balance for COVID-19 allowances.
