In a significant development, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued a directive to workers, ordering the complete suspension of operations in shipping companies. Starting from Monday, an indefinite nationwide strike will be initiated by the union due to an ongoing disagreement with shipping companies regarding inadequate compensation and employee welfare.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, the President-General of MWUN, expressed deep disappointment over the prolonged struggle faced by Organised Labour since 2018 in their negotiations with shipping companies to establish a minimum standard for worker welfare.

Despite numerous ultimatums and interventions by the former Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo, the multinational shipping companies have steadfastly refused to comply. Prince Adeyanju expressed sorrow over the deplorable working conditions endured by employees within Nigeria's shipping industry, comparing it to a form of contemporary slavery.

In related news, the situation regarding the nationwide strike and the grievances of the MWUN with shipping companies remains unresolved.
