Individuals and groups intending to commemorate 'Cultists Day' on July 7 in Osun and Ekiti have been cautioned by the police, who have issued warnings of arrests and prosecutions for those who persist in their plans.
Ahead of the upcoming 'Cultists Day' on Friday, the police commands have individually released statements containing warnings.
According to SP Yemisi Opalola, the police spokesperson in Osun, the command has expressed zero tolerance for illegal assemblies and has issued a stern warning to hoteliers, event centers, and landlords, urging them not to permit their premises to be used for cult-related activities. The statement also highlighted the possibility of prosecuting owners of such establishments.
The police statement revealed that intelligence reports have indicated that cultists are planning to observe July 7, 2023 as a celebration of cultism. Additionally, it was noted that certain individuals from other states with ulterior motives are entering Osun state for the same purpose.
The police statement further emphasized that the command is actively monitoring the activities of cultists and other individuals involved, and strongly urged them to abandon their plans or any related actions immediately. It was also noted that the police command is working in collaboration with other security agencies and the Civilian JTF to prevent any form of illegal gathering that may disrupt the peaceful environment of the state.
The statement highlighted that Police Commissioner Kehinde Longe has instructed area commanders, divisional police officers, and tactical units to maintain a high level of vigilance and promptly address any potential threats to peace within the state.
In addition, the police chief advised parents and guardians to guide their children and wards, urging them to adhere to the law and refrain from participating in any form of unlawful gathering.

Similarly, in Ekiti, the police commissioner, Dare Ogundare, issued a warning to both cultists and the general public through a statement relayed by the command spokesperson, DSP Sunday Abutu. The commissioner stated that the command would not permit any gatherings of cultists who have devised plans to initiate new members or engage in violent confrontations with rival cult groups.
Mr. Ogundare provided assurance to the public, stating that comprehensive security measures have been implemented to safeguard the lives and property of law-abiding citizens.
