According to Nigeria's former Head of State, Retired General Yakubu Gowon, making consistent investments in the ever-changing healthcare sector would greatly aid in meeting the medical requirements of Nigerians.

On Friday, during the 50th anniversary celebration of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin City, Edo State, which he commissioned as head of state on May 12, 1973, General Gowon and his wife Victoria returned to the hospital. The facility, which started as a 360-bed hospital 50 years ago, has now expanded to a 960-bed health institution. Gowon emphasized the need for everyone in the healthcare industry to be ready to embrace modern medical practices and adapt to changes.

Gowon stated that the healthcare industry is constantly changing and it's crucial to adapt and innovate to meet the evolving needs of patients. He called for a renewed commitment to delivering quality healthcare to all Nigerians.

The Federal Government praised UBTH for establishing itself as a top referral center. Dr. Osagie Ehanire, the Minister of Health, stated that UBTH is expanding its reputation in cancer treatment and is positioning itself as a center of excellence. He also mentioned that the hospital is planning to acquire more resources for cancer treatment.

The UBTH has played a significant role in healthcare delivery, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has been a valuable asset to the Edo State Government. Governor Godwin Obaseki emphasized the need for adequate funding for public institutions to deliver quality healthcare services. He noted that health financing should be prioritized, as the government alone cannot bear the burden of healthcare costs, especially with the rise of private healthcare providers.
