Accusing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) of fraudulence, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has urged them to halt their continuous complaints about the 2023 presidential election that they lost badly.
Lai Mohammed issued a statement on Sunday, stating that President Muhammadu Buhari's assessment of the reasons behind the opposition's defeat in the 2023 elections was undeniable. He further claimed that the opposition lost due to their excessive self-assurance and lack of effort.
The Minister praised the President for organizing the most successful election in Nigeria's history and claimed that he deserves commendations. He also commented that the opposition's expectedly turbulent response to the President's remarks has exposed their lack of grace as they are refusing to accept the election outcome.
According to Mohammed, President Muhammadu Buhari fulfilled his obligation by conducting a transparent and trustworthy election, establishing his legacy. Mohammed praised the President for upholding the election's integrity, even at the cost of losing his state and many of his party's key areas. He credited this to the President's impartiality, which resulted in a level playing field for all political parties involved.
He also added that the opposition's overconfidence prior to the election was fueled in part by a barrage of social media propaganda and flawed, manipulated opinion polls. These tools were intended to deceive their foreign supporters and a portion of the global media into believing they were cruising to victory, despite actually heading for defeat.
The Minister claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC)'s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emerged victorious in the presidential election after receiving a majority of the votes and meeting the constitutional requirement of gaining at least 25% of votes cast in at least two-thirds of all states, including the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the Minister, the opposition parties failed to meet the necessary conditions for winning the presidential election, despite their pre-election bluster, as the election results demonstrate. They did not come close to meeting these requirements.
Despite their pre-election boasting, none of the opposition parties came close to fulfilling the requirements for winning the presidential election, as indicated by the election results.
Mohammed accused the opposition of relying on international observers to bolster their unfounded claim of election rigging. However, he pointed out that Ambassador Johnnie Carson, a respected US diplomat who co-led the International Election Observation Mission to Nigeria for both the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and International Republican Institute (IRI), affirmed that the APC candidate had undoubtedly won the election.
Additionally, Mohammed claimed that the opposition conveniently overlooked the African Union Election Observation Mission's report, which stated that the election was relatively tranquil and peaceful in 95% of the visited polling stations.
He stated that many countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, quickly congratulated the APC's victorious Presidential Candidate based on these evaluations.
According to Mohammed, the opposition's suggestion that the delay in uploading the presidential election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) Results Viewing Portal (IReV) undermined the election's legitimacy is fraudulent. He described it as a dishonest and manipulative tactic employed by desperate individuals.
Furthermore, he stated that the Labour Party's claim of victory despite finishing a distant third in the presidential election will be recorded in history as a significant event.
