It is noteworthy that NYSC is a program that was established by the Nigerian government on May 22, 1973, during the military regime to engage Nigerian graduates in the country's development and nation-building efforts.

According to Decree No. 24, the NYSC scheme was created to foster the development of common bonds among Nigerian youth and promote national unity.

One of the eligibility criteria for the Scheme is that a graduate should not be above 30 years old upon graduation. However, if a graduate completed their studies before turning 30 but skipped the service year, they would still be eligible as long as their graduation certificate was dated before their 30th birthday.

Individuals who are over the age of 30 receive a Certificate of Exemption, which is considered to be equivalent to the NYSC Discharge Certifcate.
