On Tuesday, President Joe Biden declared his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, at the notable age of 80, diving into a rigorous new White House campaign with the goal of "finishing the job."

In a video shared on Twitter, President Biden stated that every generation has had to fight for democracy and their basic liberties. He believes that this moment is ours, which is why he is running for re-election as President of the United States. Biden urges people to join him and help "finish the job."

Having secured several major legislative victories and facing significant foreign policy challenges during his first two years in office, President Biden currently faces no significant opposition within the Democratic Party.

While running for a potential rematch of the 2020 election against Donald Trump, the veteran Democrat would encounter persistent and intense scrutiny about his age. He would turn 86 by the conclusion of a second term, and although a medical examination in February concluded he was "fit" to fulfill the presidential duties, many, including some of his supporters, question his ability to serve given his advanced age. According to an NBC News poll, which was published over the weekend, 70% of Americans, including 51% of Democrats, think he should not run.

Of those who said that Biden should not run, 69% mentioned his age as either a significant or minor factor. Despite these concerns, Biden typically responds by urging voters to observe his actions and accomplishments, using the phrase "watch me." He believes that voters should focus on his policy victories at home and his leadership in forming an unprecedented Western alliance to assist Ukraine in defending itself from Russia's invasion.

In the coming year and a half, Biden will have the benefit of being the incumbent president, backed by a cohesive party, while Republicans are only just beginning a chaotic primary season.

Despite being the first serving or former president to be criminally indicted and facing investigations into his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in favor of Biden, Trump is currently the clear front-runner among Republicans.

Trump wasted no time on Monday before launching his own critique of the person who defeated him in the last election. He stated in a press release, "Considering the disastrous and unsuccessful presidency that Biden has had, it's difficult to imagine why he would even consider running for a second term."

The Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, is the Republican candidate with the highest chance of challenging the 76-year-old Trump. Despite being significantly younger at 44, DeSantis shares many of Trump's conservative views.

Although not a campaign rally, the planned topic of discussion - "how his American investment agenda is reviving manufacturing, restoring the middle class, and generating well-paying union jobs" - was expected to be the cornerstone of the Democrat's message for the 2024 elections.

Biden's approval ratings have not surpassed 50% in more than 18 months, leaving some to question if his message is too bland for comfort. Despite this, he has consistently exceeded expectations when it matters most. Supporters argue that the Democratic Party's unexpectedly strong showing in the 2022 midterm congressional elections is a testament to the appeal of the Biden brand.

In contrast to Trump's flamboyant persona, Biden may come across as plain, but he believes his moderate, traditional image is the key to success in an era of increasing extremism.

Biden frequently quotes his father's words, saying, "Joey, don't compare me to God. Compare me to someone else." He believes that the contrast between his approach and that of his opponents is what sets him apart and makes him a more appealing candidate.
