The Bola Tinubu presidency's response to the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) report on Nigeria's 2023 general elections has been criticized by the Neo Africana Centre.
They characterized the reaction as hasty, impulsive, and inappropriate. Furthermore, they warned the presidency against the inclination to assume the role of the judge in its own situation.
The final report of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) on Nigeria's 2023 general elections was recently published after three months of comprehensive observation throughout the country. One of the key findings of the report was the identification of persistent systemic deficiencies that hindered transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability in the elections.
The report highlighted that deficiencies in electoral laws and administrative processes obstructed the smooth and inclusive conduct of elections, resulting in diminished confidence in the electoral commission. Notably, the report emphasized the commission's failure to promptly publish and provide access to real-time election results.
In a prompt response, the presidency swiftly disregarded the report, characterizing it as a result of inadequate research and analysis. Furthermore, the presidency explicitly rejected any insinuations or suggestions from any source indicating that the 2023 election was fraudulent.
According to the presidency, the election was not only deemed credible, but it was also declared the most unrestricted, impartial, and transparent election Nigeria has witnessed since 1999.
The public policy think tank, through its Director of Public Affairs, Jenkins Udu, issued a statement expressing its disapproval of the presidency's involvement in a report primarily focused on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The think tank deemed it absurd for the presidency to insert itself into a report that primarily addressed the actions of INEC. It criticized the presidency for its precipitous response and cautioned against any actions or reactions that might imply a desire to act as the arbiter in its own situation.
