The prestigious list of the top 1,000 universities in the world for 2023 includes three Nigerian institutions: University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG), and Covenant University.

These rankings were compiled by Times Higher Education for their World University Rankings 2023. This comprehensive evaluation assessed 1,799 universities spanning 104 countries and regions, resulting in the most expansive and diverse university rankings ever conducted.

Among Nigerian universities, the University of Ibadan secured the highest position, followed by UNILAG and Covenant University.

In the latest rankings by the Times Higher Education, the University of Ibadan has emerged as the third best university in Africa, preceded by the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa and Aswan University in Egypt.

According to the Times' World University ranking, the University of Ibadan secured a position within the range of 401 to 500 among the best universities worldwide.

Similarly, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) also achieved a ranking within the same range, but the University of Ibadan was placed ahead of UNILAG due to specific factors considered by Times Higher Education.

Covenant University has secured a position within the range of 600 to 800 among the best universities globally. However, it obtained the 10th spot among African universities. It is worth noting that apart from these three universities, no other Nigerian institution has made it to the top 1,000 in the world rankings.

Bayero University Kano (BUK) and the Federal University of Agriculture (FUTA) hold the fourth and fifth positions among Nigerian universities. In the rankings, BUK falls within the range of 1,001 to 1,200, while FUTA is placed within the same range.
