In a letter to King Charles III, lawyer Kayode Ajulo has requested a prerogative of mercy for Ike Ekweremadu, the former Deputy Senate President, and his wife Beatrice, who were convicted by a British court. The plea was disclosed to the press in Abuja on Saturday.

The Old Bailey Court sentenced Ike, his wife, and Doctor Obinna Obeta to prison terms of nine years, four years, and 10 years, respectively, for violating British laws on kidney donation and transplant.

In a letter to King Charles III, lawyer Kayode Ajulo expressed mixed emotions about the monarch's coronation and pleaded for the Royal Prerogative of Mercy to be invoked in favor of the convicted couple, Ekweremadu and his wife.

He characterized the story of Ekweremadu and his wife as a sorrowful one that left a disagreeable impression.

He asserted that their conduct was a "desperate" action taken by parents who were attempting to rescue their daughter Sonia's life.

According to Ajulo, the young lady was in a critical state that required a kidney transplant, but regrettably, her parents and doctor handled the matter in an unpalatable manner.

He elaborated that Ekweremadu may have opted not to publicly appeal for a kidney donor to prevent fraudsters from exploiting his daughter' sillness.
