AC Milan announced on Saturday that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has suffered an injury to his right calf, which may mark the conclusion of his injury-plagued season. The duration of his absence was not disclosed by the team, but they did mention that there is a slight possibility for him to participate before the conclusion of the season in early June.
During the warm-up before Milan's 2-0 victory over Lecce last weekend, the experienced forward sustained the injury. Ibrahimovic, who played a significant part in Milan's return to the pinnacle of Italian football, has scarcely appeared for Stefano Pioli's team throughout the season. He returned in February after having undergone surgery on his left knee in May.
In the entire season, the 41-year-old has only been named in the starting lineup for Milan once. He accomplished this in March during a 3-1 victory over Udinese, during which he made history by becoming the oldest player to score a goal in Serie A.
As he is not included in the roster of players qualified for Milan's Champions League campaign, he will not compete in the semi-final derby against Inter Milan next month. Ibrahimovic's recent injury raises uncertainty about whether he will retire at the end of the season since his agreement will expire in June, and no announcement has been made regarding a contract extension.
